A: Repaired femur fracture with IM-ESF tie in. Large IM pin was difficult to bend so the ESF sticks out further than desired, will need to monitor to make sure it is not getting in the way or bothering the bird.
P: Monitor pin sites, sutures line for drainage and dehiscence. Monitor stability of ESF.

Procedure - Fracture repair - femur | Performed by - AD | Surgery time - 60 minutes | Pre-medicated with torb IM. Anesthetized via isoflurane facemask.
Intubated with 3.5 uncuffed ET tube. Placed in L lateral recumbency,
plucked and scrubbed R femur for surgery. Incised over the fracture
site with #15 blade, bluntly dissected through muscle down to
fracture site. Bones very overridding, had to dissect through
large amount of muscle. Placed IM pin retrograde up the proximal
fragment and out the femur near the hip, blunted the distal end
of the pin and drove across the fracture site and into the distal
fragment once the bone ends were realigned. Took x-rays intraop
to confirm placement. Cleaned site with saline soaked gauze.
Closed muscle and skin with 4-0 webcryl in seperate simple continuous
patterns. Placed 1 cross pin in each bone fragment. Bent IM
pin around the femur and secured IM pin and cross pins together
with epoxy. IM pin large, unable to as close to body as would
have preferred. Patient recovered uneventfully from anesthesia.
